Businesses in Vietnam were hit by more than 1.44 million cyberattacks in the first half of 2024, averaging over 8,000 incidents a day, according to data released by cybersecurity firm Kaspersky on Thursday.
The figures highlighted the scale of web-based threats targeting businesses across Southeast Asia.
Web-based threats, also known as online threats, are cybersecurity risks that can lead to unexpected incidents via the Internet.
Web threats can stem from vulnerabilities in end users, web service developers and operators, or web services themselves.
Regardless of intent or cause, such threats pose significant risks to both individuals and organizations.
During the first half of the year, Kaspersky's security solutions detected and blocked over 26 million web threats targeting Southeast Asian businesses.
On average, businesses in the region faced 146,944 cyberattacks per day.
Malaysia topped the list with more than 19.6 million web threats, followed by Indonesia with 3.2 million.
Vietnam and Thailand ranked lower, with total web attacks of 1.44 million and 1.05 million, respectively.
Meanwhile, 846,837 threats were recorded in the Philippines and 574,292 in Singapore.
Yeo Siang Tiong, general manager for Southeast Asia at Kaspersky, said that the push for digitalization by governments and businesses in the region to spur economic growth has increased reliance on digital platforms.
“This leads to more opportunities for cybercriminals to exploit vulnerabilities in unprotected systems, which can cause disruptions to supply chains, financial institutions, and critical infrastructure such as healthcare and energy,” he continued.
Such incidents can damage productivity, lead to financial losses, and erode trust in digital systems, the general director added.
