All 184 official members of the Vietnamese Engineering Unit Rotation 2 have arrived in the Abyei area, located in Africa for the UN peacekeeping mission, after flying over 11,000km for more than 60 hours.

Upon their arrival, the unit was taken to barracks in Highway Base, some three kilometers from the headquarters of the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA).

Colonel Nguyen Viet Hung, head of the Engineering Unit Rotation 2, confirmed that all the unit members safely moved to Highway Base.

Besides receiving tasks handed over from Vietnam’s Engineering Unit Rotation 1, the Engineering Unit Rotation 2 will repair and reinforce barracks to soon ensure stable accommodations for all members.

They will also receive and repair equipment and vehicles, as well as conduct tasks assigned by the UNISFA.

Previously, the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense held a ceremony at Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi on August 8 to deploy the Engineering Unit Rotation 2 to the UNISFA in the Abyei region.

Senior Lieutenant General Phung Si Tan, deputy chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army and deputy head of the defense ministry’s steering committee for the participation in UN peacekeeping operations, asked all the members to stay united, overcome all obstacles, and accomplish their assigned tasks.

They were told to uphold and promote the great traditions and image of the Vietnam People's Army to international friends, contribute to the effective implementation of the Vietnamese Party and state’s foreign policy, and enhance the position of Vietnam and its army in the global arena, Tan said.

They must strictly comply with the regulations of the UN and the UNISFA, the law of the host country, as well as the law of Vietnam and its military’s disciplines.

The Ministry of National Defense on November 20 last year passed a decision to establish the Engineering Unit Rotation 2, composed of 203 officers with 19 being female. Of the total, 184 are official members and 19 are the reserves.

The Vietnamese Engineering Unit Rotation 1 was deployed to the UN mission in the Abyei region in 2022, marking the first time this Southeast Asian nation had sent an engineering team to a UN peacekeeping mission.

It also had the biggest number of staff members among the Vietnamese units sent to UN peacekeeping missions, according to the Vietnam News Agency.
