Chairman of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Vyacheslav Victorovich Volodin will start an official visit to Vietnam on Sunday, according to the Vietnamese National Assembly (NA)’s Committee for Foreign Affairs.
The two-day visit was scheduled at the invitation of Vietnamese NA Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue, the committee said in a press release on Thursday.
Previously, the visit was slated for June 25 to 26, but it was postponed due to an unexpected situation in Russia.
The upcoming visit will mark 11 years of the comprehensive strategic partnership between Vietnam and Russia.
This year also marks the 100th anniversary of Vietnamese State President Ho Chi Minh’s arrival in Russia as part of his journey to save the country.
Volodin previously paid a visit to Vietnam in December 2018, when the two sides agreed to strengthen their extensive cooperation between their countries and parliaments, marking a new developmental step in the Vietnam-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership.
The highlight of that visit was the signing of an agreement to establish the Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Committee between the NA of Vietnam and the Russian State Duma.
This was the first time Vietnam’s NA had set up inter-parliamentary cooperation with a nation.
With this new cooperation mechanism, Vietnam and Russia were expected to promote cooperation in various potential fields, especially parliamentary activities, bringing the traditional ties between the two countries to a new level.
Vietnam and Russia established diplomatic ties in 1950 and elevated their relationship to a strategic partnership in 2001 and then a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2012.
On November 30, 2021, the two countries issued a joint statement on the vision of their comprehensive strategic partnership by 2030 during the official visit to Russia by then-Vietnamese State President Nguyen Xuan Phuc.
