Mongolia’s President Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh and his spouse will pay a visit to Vietnam on Wednesday next week at the invitation of Vietnamese State President Vo Van Thuong, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Friday.
His five-day trip to Vietnam is to be made one year before the two nations mark the 70th anniversary of their diplomatic ties.
This will be the first state visit to Vietnam by a Mongolian president in 10 years.
Khurelsukh traveled to the Southeast Asian nation in January 2010 when he served as secretary-general of the Mongolian People’s Party.
The two presidents of Vietnam and Mongolia met each other in the United Kingdom in May, while they were attending the coronation of King Charles III.
Khurelsukh actively promoted ties with Vietnam when he held office as deputy prime minister and prime minister between 2014 and 2021.
Mongolia always sees Vietnam as its key trade partner in Southeast Asia and the Asia-Pacific region.
Two-way trade is still modest due to difficulty in transport and geographical proximity.
As of November 2019, Mongolian firms had got involved in three projects in Vietnam, ranking Mongolia 96th among 126 countries and territories investing in the Southeast Asian nation, with a total value of US$1.1 million.
The two nations are working to expand import and export activities, focusing on farm produce, seafood, and consumer goods manufactured in Vietnam, as well as meat and footwear made in Mongolia.
The Mongolian president’s Vietnam visit is expected to cement the traditional friendship, and center around programs aimed to celebrate 70 years of their diplomatic relations in 2024.
Mongolia, a country in Central Asia, spans over 1.56 million square kilometers, and has a population of more than 3.4 million people.
Mongolia’s economy is mainly reliant on mining and husbandry.
It boasts the mineral wealth of bronze, coal, gold, aluminum, and uranium.
The mining industry accounts for over 50 percent of Mongolia’s gross domestic product.
