Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone and his spouse are scheduled to start an official visit to Vietnam on Saturday at the invitation of his Vietnamese counterpart Pham Minh Chinh, marking his first trip to the neighboring country since taking office in December 2022.
During his Vietnam visit, the Lao leader will co-chair the 46th meeting of the Vietnam-Laos Inter-governmental Committee from January 6 to 7, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
This visit follows the Vietnamese premier's trip to Laos in January of the previous year.
After attending a welcome ceremony hosted by PM Chinh, Siphandone is set to engage in a series of activities in Hanoi.
The two leaders of Vietnam and Laos met with each other several times at multilateral events in 2023.
The Lao prime minister’s selecting Vietnam as one of his first destinations in 2024 showed that Laos attaches much significance to its partnership with Vietnam.
This year is anticipated to mark a key milestone for Laos’ diplomatic activities as the country assumes the chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) for 2024.
During multiple meetings between Vietnamese and Lao leaders last year, the top Vietnamese officials pledged to give maximum support to Laos to fulfill its role as the chair of ASEAN.
In related news, Chairperson of the Bulgarian National Assembly Rosen Dimitrov Zhelyazkov will visit Vietnam from January 5 to 9 at the invitation of his Vietnamese counterpart Vuong Dinh Hue.
