President of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 78) Dennis Francis will pay a visit to Vietnam from July 21 to 23, according to the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The coming visit by President Francis, at the invitation of Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son, will be the first time that a UNGA president has visited Vietnam, the ministry's spokesperson Pham Thu Hang said at a press meeting in Hanoi on Thursday.
During his three-day stay in Vietnam, President Francis will hold talks with Minister Son, meet with other senior Vietnamese leaders, and take part in a number of other activities.
The visit is scheduled at a time when relations between Vietnam and the UN have grown increasingly deeper and more effective since Vietnam became a UN member in 1977, stated Hang.
The spokeswoman underscored that the UNGA 78 president’s visit will contribute to promoting cooperation between the two sides in a deeper and more effective manner.

As a proactive and positive UN member country, Vietnam has contributed substantially and extensively to the UN’s activities in all areas including peacekeeping, security, and development cooperation.
The Southeast Asian country has also taken on several successful roles at the UN, including two terms as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, and is currently a member of the UN Human Rights Council, the spokesperson added.
In September last year, during his trip to the U.S. to attend the high-level General Debate of the UNGA 78 and other activities, Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh had a meeting with the UNGA 78 president, who highly appreciated the UN-Vietnam relationship and said he was really impressed by the Southeast Asian country’s socio-economic development achievements.
President Francis also praised Vietnam’s active and dynamic role, as well as its rising position on the global stage, including its involvement in UN peacekeeping activities.
He spoke highly of the country’s cooperation with the UN in the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals, climate change response, and food security.
The UNGA 78 president also hailed Vietnam’s achievements in poverty reduction and national development, which he said should be shared to the world.
