Ho Chi Minh City will take a leading role in cooperating with Cuba and dedicate efforts to helping the Caribbean nation overcome its difficulties, Nguyen Thanh Nghi, standing deputy secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee, told a reception for Cuban Ambassador to Vietnam  Rogelio Polanco Fuentes on Tuesday.

Nghi also expressed his desire to strengthen the partnership between the city and Cuba.

Vietnam is assisting Cuba in ensuring food security, energy supply, and aid, with Ho Chi Minh City being a forerunner in fostering cooperation with Cuba.

The city will continue studying and put forward solutions to effectively help Cuba during its hardship period.

This year marks the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Cuba, he said.

To make bilateral relations more effective, the city aims to boost trade and investment by sending companies from Ho Chi Minh City to Cuba to make investments, as well as promoting the export of Cuban products to Vietnam.

Besides, Nghi hinted at enhancing cultural and people-to-people exchanges to solidify the traditional friendship between the two countries.

In response, Ambassador Fuentes acknowledged the successful projects supported by Vietnam in Cuba, including the rice farming model that has achieved an impressive yield of seven metric tons per hectare, which is expected to be expanded to ensure food security in Cuba.

Additionally, a solar power project implemented by Vietnam in Cuba will contribute to Cuba's energy security.

The ambassador hoped that more projects and plans would be developed in Cuba in the future, expecting many Vietnamese firms to expand their reach in the livestock and fertilizer fields in the country.

Cuba pledged to create favorable conditions for Vietnamese enterprises to thrive in the country, he underlined.

For Cuba, Ho Chi Minh City has been a special partner, consistently sending aid shipments over the years to help the country overcome its hardship.

Ambassador Fuentes expressed hope that Nghi would further advance Vietnam’s presence in Cuba and vice versa, deepening the bilateral ties that have flourished over the years.

He also underscored that the Cuban side would collaborate with Vietnamese agencies to organize a series of events to commemorate the 65th anniversary of diplomatic ties.
