A South Korean delegation led by Prime Minister Han Duck Soo will visit Vietnam from Wednesday to Thursday to attend the state funeral of General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong, the South Korean Embassy in Hanoi announced on Tuesday.

The South Korean Embassy said that after being informed of the passing of the Vietnamese Party leader, the South Korean government expressed deep grief to Vietnam and its people.

The South Korean government decided to send a delegation led by PM Soo to Vietnam to sit in on the state funeral of the Party chief in Hanoi, according to the embassy.

The delegation is set to arrive in Vietnam on Wednesday and leave the country on Thursday.

In his condolences, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol expressed his grief over the passing of Party General Secretary Trong, a great leader of Vietnam.

On behalf of the government and people in South Korea, he sent a condolence message to the family of the Vietnamese Party leader and the Vietnamese people for losing a highly-respected leader.

He affirmed that Party General Secretary Trong’s achievements and wishes for the enormous growth of Vietnam and the cooperative partnership between Vietnam and South Korea will remain forever in the minds of the two countries’ peoples.

When serving as the Party leader, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong visited South Korea in 2014.

His visit impressed the South Korean people, acting as a foundation for the upgrade of bilateral ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2022.

In June 2022, not long after taking office, President Yeol had online talks with Party General Secretary Trong.

One year later, as part of his state visit to Vietnam in June 2023, President Yeol met the Party chief.

During their meeting, Party chief Trong reminisced about his positive experiences from his previous visit to South Korea, underscoring that while the relationship between the two nations had faced challenges over time, it was anticipated to grow stronger, benefiting both peoples.

Over the past few days, many leaders of countries, parties, and international organizations have sent telegrams and letters of condolence to Vietnam over the passing of the Party leader.

They honored his great contributions and recollected their memories of the Vietnamese leader.

With their respect for Party General Secretary Trong, several international delegations will travel to Hanoi to attend his state funeral, set to take place on July 25 and 26.

The Party chief passed away at 1:38 pm on July 19 in Hanoi at the age of 80.

Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong will lie in state at the National Funeral Hall at No. 5 Tran Thanh Tong Street in Hanoi.

The ceremony for Party General Secretary Trong will be held at the National Funeral Hall from 7:00 am to 10:00 pm on July 25 and from 7:00 am to 1:00 pm on July 26.

It will be followed by a memorial service at 1:00 pm on July 26.

A burial service for the Party chief will take place from 3:00 pm on the same day at Mai Dich Cemetery in Hanoi.

The U.S. Department of State announced on Monday that Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken would travel to Vietnam to attend the state funeral.
