Two endangered monkeys have been rescued from captivity in a house in Huong Tra town in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue.

One is a male stump-tailed macaque and the other a female rhesus macaque, both species listed as endangered in the Vietnamese Red Book.

Local police and forest rangers made a surprise check and discovered the animals.

Two police said the monkeys may have been trapped after finding injuries consistent with those caused by traps. Investigations are continuing.
