Police in the southern Dong Nai Province have detained a 58-year-old Vietnamese-American man, who, under the influence of alcohol, resisted on-duty traffic police officers and injured one of them. The case occurred in Dinh Quan District, but local police have transferred the offender, Nguyen Van Hung, to the provincial police for investigation since Hung holds American nationality, said Colonel Nguyen Duc Chuong, chief of the district police. Hung has been charged with “resisting law enforcement officers on duty,” Chuong said. On April 30, a traffic police team led by Lieutenant Nguyen Bao Khanh, found a car speeding on National Highway 20 in the district, so they signaled the vehicle to stop. The car’s driver, Hung, did not obey and continued to speed up. Khanh immediately informed the case to another unit led by Lieutenant Do Huy Trieu to stop the car. Trieu and his colleagues used a police car to chase Hung but Hung continued speeding to escape. Trieu later mobilized another car to block the highway to force Hung to stop. Hung then drove his car into the police car, causing injury to an officer. In face of Hung’s aggressive attitude, a police officer fired a shot into the air to warn him. At this moment, another police unit came to help detain Hung, who was found under the influence of alcohol. After being escorted to the office of the district police, Hung continuously insulted and swore at police officers there. “We are investigating the case and Hung will be punished for his offense,” said Colonel Ngo Van Chien, head of the provincial Road and Railway Traffic Police Department. This is not his first time. The district police had earlier given Hung an administrative penalty for public disturbance induced by alcohol, the official added.
