An alarming trend has emerged in the coastal city of Quy Nhon in Binh Dinh Province, south-central Vietnam, where groups of young people and tourists have been flocking to a steep road in Nhon Hai Commune to take photos and film, even during heavy traffic.

This trend has raised concerns about road safety and the potential for accidents.

Standing or sitting in the middle of the road to take pictures is part of a viral trend that originated in China.

It began with young people heading to a slope in Dali, China to snap photos and has quickly spread to Vietnam.

Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province in southern Vietnam and Da Lat City in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong have seen throngs of young people following the trend.

It has reached Quy Nhon, particularly the steep road in Nhon Hai Commune.

On social media, young people have been posting photos of themselves posing in the middle of the road, oblivious to the passing vehicles, sparking concern among the public.

Facebook user Luong Hoang Anh commented that the slope of the road is quite steep.

The young people are so focused on posing for photos that they fail to notice their surroundings, making it very easy for accidents to happen.

“Vehicles coming down the hill cannot always react quickly to unexpected situations. I think there should be warning signs prohibiting photo-taking in traffic areas,” he wrote.

On Monday, Ngo Quang Hoang, vice-chairman of the Nhon Hai Commune People’s Committee, said that a day earlier, local police summoned a group of young people after they were caught taking photos in the middle of the road, posing high risks of traffic accidents.

He said local authorities are taking action and dispatching officers to the road to patrol and warn locals and visitors of the danger.
