Central Quang Nam Province People’s Committee is preparing to build an international aircraft maintenance and repair center in Chu Lai Airport in the Chu Lai Open Economic Zone. The center will be constructed in the zone in Nui Thanh District under a project that was approved by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung on May 14. The PM has assigned the Ministry of Transport to coordinate with the provincial People’s Committee and other concerned agencies in reviewing the scale and method of implementation of the project. The planned aircraft maintenance and repair center meets international standards, contributing to serving the increasing demand for aircraft maintenance and repair in Asia and the world at large, the provincial People’s Committee said. In order to develop the project, the local government has assigned the Management Board of Chu Lai Open Economic Zone to call for investment from foreign partners.  The calling for investment is being made with assistance from US Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City.   Le Phuoc Thanh, chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, said he hopes the project will create a competitive edge for the Open Economic Zone in particular and the province in general in attracting foreign investment. Upon completion, the center will also contribute to turning the Chu Lai Airport into a large international one that facilitates goods transit in South East Asia. According to a recent decision by the PM, the airport will be upgraded and expanded at a total cost of about VND11 trillion (US$528.8 million) to become an international airport that can serve 4 million passenger arrivals and handle 5 million tons of goods per year by 2020.
