A TV show featuring a 50cc motorcycle racing between two Australian comedians around a crowded roundabout in Ho Chi Minh City has stirred up controversy in Vietnam.
The two Australian men who are professional comedians - Hamish Blake and Andy Lee - completed 250 rounds around the roundabout on two mini 50cc motorcycles. The site is at the intersection of Tran Phu, Hung Vuong, Ly Thai To, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, Pham Viet Chanh, and Nguyen Van Cu streets, considered one of the most crowded traffic hot spots in the city. They are dressed in yellow, with the other green.
The TV show has caused controversy among the local online community. Some netizens said the show should not be criticized because it is just for fun. “It is fun and creative. You can see many children driving or even zigzagging on such a bike on the street but they do not get any punishment,” a netizen wrote.
“I think the show just helps people reduce stress. Don’t take it seriously,” another commented.
However, some are angry over potential dangers to passers-by caused by the two. A person nicknamed Huy wrote on a social network that “It is unacceptable since it did not ensure safety for road users. Also, the bikes used by the two young men are not allowed on the street”.
The video is created under a project named “Hamish and Andy's Gap Year Asia" – a comedy series that follow Hamish Blake and Andy Lee on their trips to various international locations. Since 2003, the pair has performed many TV shows in various fields, particularly in sports and culture.
