Police in northern Quang Ninh province arrested two young men suspected to kill the owner of a jewelry shop in southern Dong Nai Province when they robbed his shop on August 27. In conjunction with their counterparts in Dong Nai, police in Quang Ninh on Friday seized Pham Ngoc Anh, 22, and Nguyen Van Long, 21, both of the Central Highlands province of Dak Lak Province, on charges of murder and robbery. The dead victim in the robbery was Nguyen Hieu Hoc, 42, who owned Hieu Hoc Jewelry Shop in Dong Nai’s Trang Bom District. After their arrest, Anh and Ngoc pleaded guilty to killing Hoc, one of their acquaintances, and robbing his shop that day. On the night of August 26, they went to the shop pretending to visit Hoc, but immediately after coming in they switched off the power supply to invalidate the system of four cameras of the shop. They then stabbed Hoc nearly 20 times to death and then took away gold items and cash worth about VND1.2 billion (US$56,600). They then escaped on Hoc’s SH scooter, heading for Lam Dong Province, while Hoc’s relatives reported the case to Dong Nai police. On the next morning, they left the scooter a parking lot in Di Linh market in Lam Dong and then took a taxi to go to another province in the Central Highland, where they stayed for several days before arriving in Quang Ninh with a view to flee to China. Meanwhile, police in Dong Nai had called on their counterparts in neighboring localities to support them in the hunt for the killers. They later were reported by police in Di Linh about Hoc’s scooter that had been left suspiciously for many days in the parking lot. From this clue, investigators could track down the killers and coordinated with police in Quang Ninh to arrest them.
