Police are investigating a case in which a woman is suspected of killing her two small children before taking her own life at their home in the southern province of Long An on Thursday.

At about 8:00 am, Do Thi Ai Nguyen, 30, her daughter Nguyen Thi Hoang Quyen, a fifth grader, and her son Nguyen Hoang Khang, a fourth grader, were found dead in their house in Can Giuoc District.

Tran Thi Phuong, Nguyen’s mother-in-law, discovered the deaths when she came to the home.

Phuong immediately reported the case to local police, who arrived and found the two children lying dead in a bed and Nguyen’s body near the back door of the house.  

They each had an injury in their neck, with Nguyen suffering an additional wound on her hip.

Police found a knife near her body.

They also read a suicide note and Nguyen’s cellphone containing text messages expressing world-weariness, news website VnExpress reported.

In the note, Nguyen said she wanted to commit suicide as she thought that she was “a bad wife, who does not deserve to be a daughter-in-law of the husband’s family.”

She said she loved her children very much and wanted to “bring them along with her to the other world,” VnExpress reported. 

When the incident occurred, Nguyen’s husband, 31-year-old Nguyen Tan Thanh, was in the southern province of Ben Tre on a business trip. 

Thanh passed out many times upon seeing the bodies of his wife and two children, and said he wanted to kill himself, but his relatives prevented him, VnExpress said. 

Nguyen’s relatives told police that she had showed signs of depression.

They added that her mother, Nguyen Thi Thuy Phuong, took Nguyen to a doctor for an examination a day before the deaths were discovered.

Nguyen had been a homemaker before her death, her mother said, adding that more than a year ago, Nguyen attempted suicide by taking medicine but she was saved just in time.
