Customs officers at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City have discovered five kilograms of heroin concealed in the luggage of a female passenger.

The woman, 37, a Vietnamese Australian, was detained at the airport on Sunday for further investigation into a heroin smuggling ring from Vietnam to Australia.

After noticing suspicious signs, customs officers and relevant agencies arrested the suspect and examined her luggage, discovering 14 bricks of heroin divided into 26 packets stashed among personal belongings.

The woman confessed that she would have received US$25,000 if she had successfully transferred the drugs, worth $750,000, to Australia.

Further investigation is ongoing, police said.
