A 58-year-old woman in Hanoi who has been going through menopause for the last three years, has given birth to a healthy baby girl.
The baby weighed 3.2 kilograms and was in good shape, the Andrology and Fertility Hospital of Hanoi announced on Saturday.
According to Le Thi Thu Hien, deputy director of the infirmary and head of the assisted reproduction department, the mother had come to the facility and expressed her hope of having a baby against the backdrop of her old age and climacteric.
Despite doctors’ warnings of the potential risks and failure of in vitro fertilization (IVF) as well as her lack of physical ability to raise the infant, the woman insisted on going through the assisted conception procedure.
Clearly it was a success as the mother has given birth to a healthy child, making her the second such case to be announced in Vietnam this year.
Earlier in 2016, the Hospital of Posts and Telecoms in the Vietnamese capital reported that Tran Thi Phuc, 53, and her husband, Nguyen Van Manh, 54, had also given birth to their first daughter, Tuong Vy, after undergoing IVF at the infirmary.
Phuc was healthy throughout her pregnancy and gave birth to Vy, weighing 2.7 kilograms.
Dr. Hien confirmed that the quality of the lining of the uterus is an essential factor in pregnancy in older women, adding that it is most desirable that women give birth before the age of 25.
She highlighted a recent trend of preserving eggs and sperm for future conception, which has been favored by those who intend to get married later or those with cancer.
Using modern technology, the doctor said that the integrity of this type of reproductive material can be ensured for up to 15 years after being frozen and preserved.
