Vietnamese traffic police officer arrested for shooting man to death

Tuesday, January 16, 2018, 16:09 GMT+7

A Vietnamese traffic policeman was taken into custody on Monday for allegedly shooting a man dead earlier this month.

The prime suspect, Nguyen Tan Phuoc, 41, lieutenant at the Traffic Police Department in Dong Nai Province, was captured in the evening, and is temporarily imprisoned, in accordance with a decision by the local People’s Procuracy.

Preliminary investigation results revealed that he killed the 30-year-old Bui Viet Hai, born in Hai Phong, northern Vietnam, with a revolver on the evening of January 6 in a rented accommodation located in Bien Hoa, the provincial capital of Dong Nai, where the latter was staying.

“Are you Hai?” Phuoc asked his victim after arriving at his room, as shown in police documents.

“Yes, I am. Who are you?” Hai answered, just before Phuoc pulled the trigger and shot him.

Hai was rushed to the hospital with the trace of a bullet running through the head from the left temple. He died later.

The shooting incident occurred after a woman with whom Phuoc had a love affair called him on his phone, saying that her 19-year-old daughter had been coaxed by Hai into taking drugs, spending time in clubs and leaving her mother’s house without her permission.

The origin of the weapon used is under investigation, for it is not the type that traffic police are supposed to carry.

Another man involved in the case is Tran Tuan Sinh, also in Bien Hoa, who had pointed out Hai’s location to Phuoc, according to VietNamNet.

A police hunt for him has been urgently launched.
