Doctors at a hospital in southern Vietnam have successfully carried out penile reattachment on a man whose family claimed he had lost his private parts by accident.
The patient had been transferred from a lower-level hospital in the Mekong Delta province of Soc Trang, the management of Can Tho Central General Hospital said on Tuesday.
The general hospital, located in Can Tho City, received a phone call on Sunday from the other infirmary saying that they would send a man who had had his penis severed for emergency care.
The patient, only identified as 40-year-old T. from Soc Trang, was admitted to Can Tho Central General Hospital bleeding in his genitals.
He had had his penis accidentally cut off, his family said without offering any further explanation.
The hospital in Soc Trang gave first aid and taught the man’s family to preserve the organ before transferring him to the Can Tho institution.
Upon admission, T. suffered from severe blood loss, low blood pressure, pale skin, and his penis entirely clipped.
The severed part was put in a plastic bag stored in an ice box.
A group of surgeons led by Dr. Nguyen Phuoc Loc immediately operated on T. and reconstructed the penis.
They made it after four hours of surgery.
T. is now in stable conditions, showing signs of good recovery.
He was saved partly because of proper first aid and penile preservation, Dr. Loc said.
“We carried out the surgery in the golden six-hour period from it being amputated,” he added.
