President of Guinea-Bissau Umaro Sissoco Embaló and his spouse arrived in Hanoi late Thursday evening, commencing a four-day official visit to Vietnam at the invitation of Party General Secretary and State President To Lam.
President Embaló and his wife were welcomed at Noi Bai International Airport by Deputy Chief of the Presidential Office Phan Thi Kim Oanh, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Minh Hang, Vietnamese Ambassador to Morocco and Guinea-Bissau Le Kim Quy, and several other officials, according to the Vietnam News Agency.
President Embaló is accompanied by Minister of Economy, Planning, and Regional Integration Soares Sambú; Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Community Carlos Pinto Pereira; Minister of Natural Resources Malam Sambu; and other Bissau-Guinean officials.
General Secretary and State President To Lam will host an official welcome ceremony and a series of talks with President Embaló on Friday.
During his stay in Vietnam, President Embaló is slated to meet with other senior Vietnamese leaders and take part in important diplomatic activities.
This is the first visit to the Southeast Asian country by a Bissau-Guinean President since the two nations established diplomatic ties in 1973, Ambassador Quy said.
The visit seeks to enhance Vietnam's bilateral cooperation with African nations in various sectors such as economics, trade, agriculture, fisheries, and processing industries, while also expanding into emerging fields like mining and port infrastructure development.
According to Quy, the invitation extended to President Embaló, along with the forthcoming visit of Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi, underscores Vietnam's deep commitment, respect, and connection with its African partners.
Originating from their mutual support during their struggles for national independence, the relationship between Vietnam and these African countries has been consistently nurtured and strengthened over the past five decades and serves as a model and testament to the possibility of successful South-South cooperation, the ambassador stated.
Guinea-Bissau is a West African country that spans 36,000 square meters and boasts a population of two million people.
Since the establishment of their diplomatic relations on September 30, 1973, Vietnam and Guinea-Bissau have maintained a strong political relationship through delegation exchanges, the Vietnam News Agency cited Vietnam's foreign ministry spokeswoman Pham Thu Hang.
This Western African country has actively supported Vietnam in various multilateral forums.
In July, Guinea-Bissau sent a delegation to Hanoi to pay tribute to late Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, who passed away on July 19 at the age of 80.
