-- Party General Secretary and State President of Vietnam To Lam held talks with President of Guinea-Bissau Umaro Sissoco Embaló in Hanoi on Friday afternoon after hosting a welcome ceremony for the latter earlier the same day. President Embaló is paying an official visit to Vietnam from Thursday through Sunday this week.

-- Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh hosted a reception in Hanoi on Friday for Tim Hughes, senior vice president for Global Business and Government Affairs of the U..S-based provider of spacecraft, satellite launch services, and satellite communications SpaceX, where he called for stronger cooperation in science-technology, innovation, artificial intelligence, and Internet of Things, the Vietnam News Agency reported.

-- Super typhoon Yagi, the third storm to hit the East Vietnam Sea this year, degraded to a typhoon on Friday evening. It was spotted 160 kilometers away from the Hai Phong - Quang Ninh region of northern Vietnam as of 6:00 am on Saturday, packing maximum sustained winds of 166 kilometers per hour near its center. Yagi forced evacuation of more than 47,000 residents mostly in Quang Ninh Province, Hai Phong City, Thai Binh Province, and Ninh Binh Province, where the typhoon is expected to make landfall on Saturday, according to the national weather agency.

-- Police in Ho Chi Minh City said on Friday that they had arrested 39-year-old Nguyen Van Tam, hailing from An Giang Province, for allegedly impersonating Nguyen Van Nen, Secretary of the city’s Party Committee, to commit fraud and appropriate assets.

-- Nguyen Thuy Hanh has been appointed CEO at Standard Chartered Bank Vietnam, effective from October 1, becoming the first Vietnamese person to hold this top leadership position at StanChart Vietnam, the bank announced on Friday.

-- The Vietnam Development Bank signed a cooperation agreement with Binh Duong Water - Environment Corporation JSC (BIWASE) on Friday to provide some VND10 trillion (US$406.6 million) in state investment credit at preferential interest rates for environmental protection projects led by BIWASE.

-- Vietnam welcomed 1.43 million international visitors in August, marking a 24.5-percent increase from the previous month and a 17.7-percent rise over the same period last year, according to data recently released by the General Statistics Office.

-- The 8WONDER Moon Festival 2024, which was initially set to be held at the Ocean City urban complex in Hanoi from September 6-8, has been rescheduled to September 14 due to the impact of typhoon Yagi, the organizers confirmed on Friday, noting that the proceeds of the event will be donated to help cope with the typhoon aftermath.
