-- Super typhoon Yagi, the third storm to hit the East Vietnam Sea this year, degraded to a typhoon on Friday evening. It was spotted 160 kilometers away from the Hai Phong - Quang Ninh region of northern Vietnam as of 6:00 am on Saturday, packing maximum sustained winds of 166 kilometers per hour near its center. Yagi forced evacuation of more than 47,000 residents mostly in Quang Ninh Province, Hai Phong City, Thai Binh Province, and Ninh Binh Province, where the typhoon is expected to make landfall on Saturday, according to the national weather agency.
-- Police in Ho Chi Minh City said on Friday that they had arrested 39-year-old Nguyen Van Tam, hailing from An Giang Province, for allegedly impersonating Nguyen Van Nen, Secretary of the city’s Party Committee, to commit fraud and appropriate assets.
