Ten high school boys in the north-central Vietnamese province of Quang Tri have been sentenced to between 30 months of probation and eight years behind bars each for gang-raping a 16-year-old girl in late March.
The trial of the ten defendants, aged 16 to 18, was carried out at the People’s Court in Trieu Phong District, Quang Tri Province on Tuesday.
They were all students of local high schools in Trieu Phong District.
At the end of the trial, the court sentenced N.T.Q., 17, to eight years in prison, L.H.M.Q.,17, N.H.P.,18, and N.T.V.,18, to seven years each, L.V.M.D., 18, to six years, and N.Q.A., 18, to 3.5 years.
The other four boys, aged 16 to 18, were given 30-36 months of probation.
According to the indictment, L.H.M.Q. threw a birthday party at his house and invited the nine other boys on the evening of March 24.
N.T.Q. then invited the victim, 16-year-old N.T.B.P., a local tenth-grade student, to join the party via a text message, to which she agreed.
N.T.Q. told the other boys to get her drunk so that they could take turns raping her, prosecutors found.
Things went according to Q.’s plan as P. became extremely drunk at around 8:00 that evening.
The boys took the intoxicated victim to a bedroom and started raping her.
They later brought the victim to a nearby plantation to carry on with the sexual attack out of fear of being caught by Q.’s family members.
After the incident, the boys took P. home and gave her a glass of milk tea mixed with birth control pills the next morning.
A police investigation later showed that six of the ten boys had had sexual intercourse with the victim, while the other four only assisted the crime.
