Three police officers were killed after being attacked by a group of people armed with grenades, petrol bombs, and knives in an outskirts neighborhood of Hanoi, the Ministry of Public Security said on Thursday.

The incident happened in Dong Tam Commune, My Duc District on Thursday morning, according to a statement published on the ministry’s website.

One of the attackers was also killed and another injured in the incident, the statement reads.

According to the announcement, several units under the Ministry of National Defense, in coordination with local authorities, have been building security fences around Mieu Mon Airport, a military airfield located in Dong Tam Commune, since December 31, 2019.

On Thursday morning, a group of people tried to obstruct the construction and stir up public disorder, the ministry said.

Police officers who were tasked with guarding the project were attacked by the mob, who were armed with grenades, petrol bombs, and knives.

Local authorities have apprehended multiple suspects involved in the serious offense and have initiated legal procedures against them in accordance with the law.

The construction of the security fences has resumed following the incident.
