Three people have been jailed for 12-24 months each for negligence that resulted in the death of a first grader in Hanoi last August.

The People’s Court in Cau Giay District on Wednesday concluded the trial of Nguyen Bich Quy, 55, Doan Quy Phien, 53, and Nguyen Thi Thuy, 29, defendants in a case where a six-year-old boy died after being neglected for hours in a bus contracted by Gateway School to transport students.

Quy, who was in charge of supervising the transportation of students on the school bus, was slapped with a 24-month jail term, while Phien, the driver, got 15 months for “involuntary manslaughter.”

Thuy, the victim’s homeroom teacher, was sentenced to 12 months in prison for “irresponsibility that led to serious consequences.”

She is also banned from teaching for one year.

According to the indictment, Phien and Quy were tasked with taking a total of 13 students from their homes to Gateway School on the morning of August 6, 2019.

Upon their arrival at the school at 7:30 am, Quy guided the students from the bus into the school but forgot six-year-old Le Hoang Long in the vehicle.

She then logged in her shift record in Gateway's administration room, saying she had picked up and dropped off all 13 students at the school.

Phien then drove the bus to a nearby parking lot, got out of the vehicle, and locked the door without noticing that Long was still inside.

Long was left inside the bus from 7:23 am to 4:15 pm that day.

Thuy noticed that Long did not come to class that day but failed to notify his parents of his unexcused absence.

Results of an autopsy showed that the young boy died from heatstroke and respiratory failure, with no other pathological cause found.

Aside from the jail terms, Phien and Quy were also required to pay the victim’s family a combined VND249 million (US$10,735) in funeral costs and compensation for their loss.
