Two Chinese nationals allegedly drowned in Bac Lieu Province, located in southern Vietnam, on the weekend, local authorities said in a document on Monday.

The document was signed by Nguyen Tan Khuong, chief of the Bac Lieu People’s Committee Office.

You Nianwu, 36, and his child You Yuelong, 4, were found dead by their in-laws in the Le Le canal in Ninh Tien Hamlet, Ninh Quoi A Commune, Hong Dan District on Saturday, according to the document.

Bac Lieu police initially concluded that they had drowned.

“The People’s Committee has sent a dispatch to the Consular Department under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ho Chi Minh City Department of External Relations, informing them of the deaths of the Chinese citizens and requesting their assistance in the next consular steps,” the document reads.

“Bac Lieu police are cooperating with relevant bodies in investigating their deaths and will make an announcement when investigation results are available.”

You Nianwu’s mother-in-law Duong Thi Lien, 51, reported to local police on Sunday that her family had found the bodies of the two in the Le Le canal, one kilometer from her house, following their disappearance on Saturday.

You Nianwu, Lien’s daughter, and their child You Yuelong had entered Vietnam on January 22 to celebrate the Lunar New Year festival with their family in Bac Lieu.
