The Sports Authority of Vietnam will receive VND8 billion (US$313,300) sourced from the state budget to revamp the turf at My Dinh National Stadium in Hanoi, with work slated to begin after June.

My Dinh Stadium, which last had its turf replaced in 2012, is showing signs of wear and tear.

After 13 years, the condition of the grass has deteriorated, severely impacting the quality of football matches and other events held there.

A representative from the authority told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Sunday that the government had approved the allocation of VND8 billion to renovate the stadium’s surface.

The stadium functions not only as a football venue but also as a site for major cultural and political events.

However, the turf has not been replaced in years and is in poor condition, with large patches of dead grass affecting the field’s quality, the representative said.

The renovation will follow existing regulations, including a public bidding process to select a contractor.

Work is scheduled to start after June, once a contractor has been named.

Apart from the deteriorating main field of the stadium, the turf of two training fields at the My Dinh National Sports Complex is also in poor shape.

The latest makeover of My Dinh National Stadium was carried out in 2021 in preparation for the 31st Southeast Asian Games, which were held in Vietnam in May 2022.

At that time, over VND400 billion ($15.6 million) was earmarked for the refurbishment of the national sports complex, including the repair of My Dinh Stadium and the purchase of new equipment for athletics and aquatic sports.

However, the stadium’s pitch was not renovated in time for the Games.

In addition, the poor state of the turf at My Dinh was a key reason why the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) selected Viet Tri Stadium in neighboring Phu Tho Province to host the 2024 ASEAN Cup matches for the national team in late 2024.

In early 2025, the VFF also decided to relocate the 2027 Asian Cup qualifying matches to a stadium in Binh Duong Province, southern Vietnam, citing the continued unsatisfactory condition of the turf at My Dinh.
