Following public complaints and media reports of severe pollution, authorities in Binh Tan District, Ho Chi Minh City have launched a cleanup operation on Chien Luoc Canal, removing an estimated four metric tons of trash.
The cleanup, initiated by the Binh Tri Dong Ward administration, came after residents voiced concerns to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper about the canal's foul-smelling accumulation of garbage.
At noon on Sunday, a cleanup team cleared debris and overgrown vegetation along the canal, hauling the collected trash away for disposal.
Much of the waste was reported to be household refuse.

Residents previously reported to Tuoi Tre that the canal became a dumping ground for litter, particularly at night.
"People here pay for trash collection services and understand the risks of dumping garbage in the canal," said resident B., who suggested that authorities impose stricter penalties to deter such behavior.
Speaking to Tuoi Tre, a Binh Tri Dong Ward official pledged to increase surveillance of the canal area to prevent future dumping.
