More than 23 million physical addresses in Vietnam have had their respective postal codes added to a publicly accessible and searchable digitalized database that is integrated with location codes for more accurate positioning.
The Ministry of Information and Communications held a ceremony at its headquarters in Hanoi on Thursday to launch the online postal code platform, Vpostcode.
Developed by state-run Vietnam Post, the platform, available at vpostcode.vn, is poised to facilitate the development of e-commerce and digitalization in the postal sector.
Vpostcode not only services the postal industry, production, and business operations but it also supports the government’s administrative work in various sectors, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam, vice-chairman of the National Committee on e-Government, said at the launch event.
The platform integrates the current postal code system into a digital map of Vietnam in order to provide pinpoint-accurate details about any location in the country.
Each code for a physical address on Vpostcode includes 12 alphanumeric characters, with the first five being the current national postal code of that address and the remainder representing the geocode of that location on the digital map.
The new postal codes are believed to offer better accuracy and stability positioning-wise.
So far, more than 23 million physical addresses in Vietnam have been assigned their new, digitalized postal codes.
Vietnam Post general director Chu Quang Hao expects the platform to improve cargo shipment and delivery for postal, transportation, logistics, and e-commerce firms.
He said the platform will help promote the companies’ production efficiency, reduce costs, and improve their competitiveness.
