A rain lasting for one hour left many people and their vehicles stuck in rainwater in Ho Chi Minh City on Wednesday.
It rained heavily during rush hour in District 2 and Binh Thanh District.
Such streets in Binh Thanh as Ung Van Khiem, Nguyen Xi, Xo Viet Nghe Tinh, and Nguyen Huu Canh were badly flooded after the one-hour rain.
Flooding also hit a site on Nguyen Huu Canh where a project has been executed to prevent floods at a cost of VND472.9 billion (US$20.4 million).
Over 500 meters of the street was submerged by rainwater whose level reached half of a motorbike wheel. Many motorbikes broke down in the middle of the street as the flooding happened at rush hour, causing traffic chaos.
Ung Van Khiem was also heavily inundated, with large vehicles making waves lash nearby motorbikes and commuters.
Rainwater flooded Tan Cang and Nguyen Van Thuong Streets in the vicinity as well.
Southern Vietnam has entered the rainy season since late last month after days suffering a heatwave during which mercury shot up to 38-40 degrees Celsius in many regions. The norm is around 30 degrees Celsius.
Big cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are prone to flooding whenever it rains solidly, despite their expensive anti-flooding projects.
