A serial traffic accident involving a passenger bus and five trucks occurred on National Highway 1 in District 12, Ho Chi Minh City on Saturday morning, injuring several people, including a child.

A passenger bus carrying about 30 passengers was moving on National Highway 1 heading toward An Suong Intersection in Hoc Mon District at around 9:30 am Saturday when it rear-ended a truck in the same direction near the intersection with Phan Van Hon Street in District 12.

The force of impact led to a pile-up involving four other trucks.

The passenger bus was badly damaged, with its front deformed and windshield and windows shattered. The five trucks were also marred, including a truck being thrust up the concrete median.

Panicked passengers tried to break the windows to escape from the coach.

“The vehicle was traveling on the road when I suddenly heard a bang,” said Sau, a passenger on the coach told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper.

“I shouted and screamed when I saw the bus door jammed,” she said, adding that she tried to smash a window to get out of the vehicle.

Truong, another passenger, told Tuoi Tre that about eight people on the bus were injured, including the bus attendant and a two-year-old child who sat behind the driver’s seat.

The incident caused traffic through the area to become seriously congested, with vehicles barely inching forward on National Highway 1.

District 12’s functional forces and related units came to the scene to handle the accident and help regulate traffic.

Authorities are working to clarify the cause of the accident
