Vietnamese police have broken up a ring that smuggled drugs from Vietnam to other countries, with the kingpin found to be an ex-policeman of South Korea.
The racket was busted last weekend, police said on Monday.
Officers urgently checked a 20-foot shipping container weighing 30 metric tons in a raid at Cat Lai, a busy port in Ho Chi Minh City, on Sunday.
The container, whose consignor said it contained granite, was bound for Incheon, South Korea.
Police officers found almost 40kg of drugs inside the granite.
Police said a South Korean national who had been a policeman for 20 years headed the ring, with coordination from Chinese accessories.
Ring members dug holes in granite masses to hide drugs for ‘export’ by sea to other countries, officers said.
Authorities have expanded their probe to catch other henchmen.
Trafficking of more than 100 grams (3.5 oz) of heroin is punishable by death or life imprisonment in Vietnam.
