Heavy rain on Thursday night battered Ho Chi Minh City harder than nearly any storm since 1984, resulting in large-scale flooding throughout the metropolis.

The torrential rain began at around 6:00 pm and lingered until midnight, with the total rainfall measuring 203.2 millimeters, according to the southern hydro-meteorological station.

The storm dumped 92.1 millimeters of water between 7:00 and 8:00 pm alone, helping it along its path toward breaking the city’s record of total rainfall and rainfall per 60 minutes.

The previous record had been in place since 1984.

The rain was the result of the combined effects of a tropical convergent strip, trough, and monsoon, the weather station elaborated.

Multiple streets in District 12, District 7, District 4, Thu Duc District, Binh Thanh District, and Go Vap District were severely flooded over the course of the storm.

Meanwhile, photos of commuters pushing broken-down motorbikes and automobiles through inundated streets flooded social media.

Massive amounts of rainwater also poured into houses in the affected areas, causing damage to furniture and appliances.

Downpours are expected to continue lashing Ho Chi Minh City and other southern provinces on Friday, the southern weather station forecast.

The rainfall will decrease in intensity on Saturday but will increase again from Tuesday next week.
