A wastewater treatment plant capable of processing 480,000 cubic meters per day — the largest in Vietnam by capacity — will be constructed in District 2, Ho Chi Minh City late this year.

A ground of 38.4 hectares in Thanh My Loi Ward in District 2 has been handed over to contractors, who are expected to commence construction of the plant in the fourth quarter of 2020, leaders of the Management Board No. 5 under the Management Board of Ho Chi Minh City Infrastructure Investment Joint Stock Company (CII) said on Friday.

This is considered the largest wastewater treatment plant in Vietnam, boasting a wastewater processing capacity of 480,000 cubic meters per day.

Household wastewater dumped from residents living along the Nhieu Loc – Thi Nghe Canal, which snakes through Districts 1, 2, and 3, and Binh Thanh, Phu Nhuan and Tan Binh Districts, will be re-routed to this plant instead of being discharged directly into the Saigon River as is the current state.

The wastewater collection will be made possible thanks to a 17-kilometer long underground sewer system, which will run parallel to the Nhieu Loc – Thi Nghe Canal and head to the new plant.

After a treatment procedure, water output from the plant is expected to qualify for rank A in QCVN 14:2008 — Vietnam’s technical regulation on domestic wastewater – before being discharged into the Saigon River and Dong Nai River.

Rank A specifies the maximum permissible value of contaminants in domestic wastewater when discharged into water sources used for domestic water supply purposes.

Around 1.8 million cubic meters of water from the Dong Nai River are processed by the Saigon Water Corporation and distributed to Ho Chi Minh City residents every day.

The construction project is part of the bidding package XL-02 on designing and constructing the Nhieu Loc – Thi Nghe wastewater treatment plant.

This, in turn, lies under the ambitious Environmental Sanitation Project Phase 2 in Ho Chi Minh City, which looks to restore and preserve the Saigon River and the lower basin of the Dong Nai River.

The French contractor Vinci Construction Grands Project and their Spanish counterpart Aceciona Agua has been appointed to implement the construction work.

The construction project of this plant has a total investment capital of more than VND5,466 billion (US$236 million) and is expected to take place over 120 months.
