Certain roads in Ho Chi Minh City’s District 1 had a QR (Quick Response) code reader installed under their street name signs on Tuesday to provide people with useful information about the areas.

With the installation of QR readers, the first of its kind in Ho Chi Minh City, people can use smartphones to scan the code.

The information will be extracted into an image file showing the history, location, length, width, and a biography of the street’s namesake.

The information was supplied by the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture and Sports and updated by the municipal Department of Transport.

QR codes are two-dimensional barcodes that are made up of black-and-white squares which link to information such as images, videos, text, and web pages. The encoded information can be read using a smartphone.

The QR reader scheme is first piloted for street name signs at the intersections of Le Thanh Ton - Dong Khoi, Le Thanh Ton - Pasteur, Ly Tu Trong - Pasteur, Ly Tu Trong - Dong Khoi, Nguyen Du - Dong Khoi, and Le Duan – Cong Xa Paris in District 1.

The municipal transport department said it will welcome feedback from relevant agencies, units, and residents to continue to improve the QR readers before mass installation.
