Vietnam on Thursday recorded 713 new cases of COVID-19, including a whopping number of 464 local infections in Ho Chi Minh City, according to the Ministry of Health.
This is still not a record daily increase in the Southeast Asian country as it had added 868 infections, including 845 domestic cases, on June 25.
In Ho Chi Minh City, the number of new local cases on Thursday almost doubled that of the day before and took its tally since the latest coronavirus wave erupted in Vietnam on April 27 to 4,302 infections.
Two hundred and twenty-nine additional locally-transmitted cases were reported in 15 other provinces and cities.
Twenty imported cases were registered in Tay Ninh, An Giang, Kien Giang, Da Nang, and Hanoi.
Since the eruption of the current virus round, Vietnam has recorded 14,188 domestically-infected patients in 51 out of its 63 provinces and cities.
Bac Giang is leading the table with 5,656 patients, followed by Ho Chi Minh City with 4,302 and Bac Ninh Province with 1,608.
By comparison, Vietnam confirmed 106 community cases in the first wave from January 23 to April 16, 2020, 554 in the second from July 25 to December 1, 2020, and 910 in the third from January 28 to March 25, 2021.
Overall, the health ministry has reported 17,576 infections, including 15,758 local and 1,818 imported cases, since the virus emerged in the Southeast Asian nation on January 23, 2020.
A total of 7,247 patients have recovered from the respiratory disease, including 407 announced on Thursday, whereas 81 have been confirmed dead, most with serious underlying diseases.
Fourteen provinces and cities in the country have not logged any local infections over the past 14 days.
A total of 3,776,980 shots have been administered across the country since inoculation was rolled out on March 8.
More than 193,000 people have finished their two-shot regimen.
