Two children drowned after falling into deep water while picking scrap from a lake in the south-central Vietnamese province of Binh Dinh on Wednesday afternoon.

The incident occured in Phuoc An Commune, Tuy Phuoc District, Binh Dinh at around 3:00 pm on Wednesday, according to Huynh Tan Dung, the commune’s chairman.

The two victims, V.M.Th., 7, and N.Q.B., 13, visited Coc Ke Lake with a friend to collect scrap that was floating near the lake’s edge.

When Th. fell into the lake, B. waded in the water to save the 7-year-old, but both children could not make it out.

Locals heard the friend shout for help, but failed to make it to the lake in time.

Both bodies were recovered from the lake and handed over to their families.

“This is a very heartbreaking incident,” said Dung.

"I hope parents will pay more attention to their children to avoid similar tragic cases."
