Vietnam announces 15,220 new COVID-19 patients, 252 fatalities

The Ministry of Health registered 15,220 more COVID-19 cases throughout Vietnam on Tuesday, alongside 4,524 recoveries and 252 virus-related fatalities.

The latest infections, including 17 imported and 15,203 domestic transmissions, were logged in 62 provinces and cities, the ministry said, noting that 9,351 patients caught the pathogen in the community.

Ca Mau Province recorded 1,011 of the newest cases, Ho Chi Minh City 991, Tay Ninh Province 931, Binh Phuoc Province 907, Hanoi 837, Can Tho City 692, Khanh Hoa Province 597, Thua Thien-Hue Province 394, Hai Phong City 382, Binh Duong Province 352, Dong Nai Province 336, Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province 258, Bac Ninh Province 225, Binh Thuan Province 211, Lam Dong Province 193, Da Nang 177, Quang Nam Province 80, Quang Ninh Province 62, and Bac Giang Province 11.

Vietnam had documented 15,349 locally-acquired infections on Monday.

The country has detected 1,438,207 community transmissions in all its 63 provinces and cities since the fourth virus wave erupted on April 27. A combined 1,057,619 of them have recovered from COVID-19.

Ho Chi Minh City has been the hardest-hit locality with 489,165 patients, followed by Binh Duong Province with 287,908, Dong Nai Province with 92,911, Tay Ninh Province with 40,546, Long An Province with 39,319, Dong Thap Province with 31,722, Can Tho City with 29,650, Tien Giang Province with 29,301, An Giang Province with 27,642, Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province with 22,424, Binh Thuan Province with 22,193, Khanh Hoa Province with 20,613, Hanoi with 19,636, and Da Nang with 8,327.

Vietnam confirmed a mere 1,570 locally-transmitted infections in total in the previous three waves.

The health ministry announced 4,524 recovered patients on Tuesday, bringing the total to 1,060,436.

The toll has mounted to 28,333 fatalities after the ministry recorded 252 deaths on the same day, including 64 in Ho Chi Minh City, 28 in An Giang Province, 27 in Dong Nai Province, 18 in Binh Duong Province, 16 in Tay Ninh Province, and the remaining in 20 other provinces and cities.  

Vietnam has logged 1,443,648 patients since the COVID-19 pandemic first hit it early last year.

Health workers have given more than 133.6 million vaccine doses, including 748,830 shots on Monday, since vaccination was rolled out nationwide on March 8.

Over 75 million of the country’s 98 million people have received at least one dose while upwards of 58.6 million are now fully immunized.

Vietnam aims to fully inoculate 100 percent of its adult population this year. Many provinces and cities are immunizing children aged 12-17 against COVID-19, using Pfizer-BioNTech shots.
