The Ministry of Health reported 15,527 additional COVID-19 cases across Vietnam on Wednesday, together with 2,992 recoveries and 283 virus-related mortalities.

The latest infections, including five imported and 15,522 domestic transmissions, were detected in 61 provinces and cities, the ministry said, elaborating that 9,940 patients were infected in the community.

Ho Chi Minh City recorded 1,270 of the newest cases, Ca Mau Province 1,072, Ben Tre Province 1,035, Hanoi 1,024, Can Tho City 720, Khanh Hoa Province 593, Dong Nai Province 464, Binh Duong Province 371, Thua Thien-Hue Province 329, Bac Ninh Province 300, Binh Thuan Province 266, Lam Dong Province 257, Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province 238, Da Nang 236, Hai Phong City 116, Quang Nam Province 115, Quang Ninh Province 49, and Bac Giang Province 16.

Vietnam had registered 15,203 locally-acquired infections on Tuesday.

The country has logged 1,453,729 community transmissions in all its 63 provinces and cities since the fourth virus wave erupted on April 27. A combined 1,060,611 of them have recovered from COVID-19.

Ho Chi Minh City is on top of the caseload with 490,435 patients, followed by Binh Duong Province with 288,279, Dong Nai Province with 93,375, Tay Ninh Province with 41,468, Long An Province with 39,401, Dong Thap Province with 32,454, Can Tho City with 30,370, Tien Giang Province with 29,712, An Giang Province with 27,936, Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province with 22,662, Binh Thuan Province with 22,459, Khanh Hoa Province with 21,206, Hanoi with 20,660, and Da Nang with 8,563.

Vietnam confirmed a paltry 1,570 locally-transmitted infections in total in the previous three waves.

The health ministry announced 2,992 recovered patients on Wednesday, taking the total to 1,063,428.

The toll has spiked to 28,616 fatalities after the ministry documented 283 deaths on the same day, including 74 in Ho Chi Minh City, 27 in An Giang Province, 25 in Binh Duong Province, 23 in Can Tho City, 22 in Dong Nai Province, and the remaining in 18 other provinces and cities.  

Vietnam has recorded 1,459,175 patients since the COVID-19 pandemic first hit it early last year.

Health workers have administered more than 135 million vaccine doses, including 568,806 shots on Tuesday, since vaccination was rolled out nationwide on March 8.

Over 75.1 million of the country’s 98 million people have received at least one dose while upwards of 59 million are now fully immunized.

Vietnam targets to fully inoculate 100 percent of its adult population this year. Many provinces and cities are immunizing children aged 12-17 against COVID-19, using Pfizer-BioNTech shots.
