Extreme weather during the rainy season that just ended has left the central Vietnamese province of Quang Ngai’s beaches filthy with garbage washing ashore.

Authorities in Quang Ngai Province’s namesake capital city sent a task force to beaches in Tinh Ky Commune on Saturday to evaluate the impacts of the huge amount of trash pushed out by the downpours during the monsoon. 

More than 200 metric tons of garbage, mostly household waste and plastic bags, has covered about 300 meters of beaches in Tinh Ky since the beginning of the monsoon, according to the authorities.

“Big waves wash in garbage,” said Nguyen Thi Thao, a local woman.

In addition to plastic waste, rotting sea creatures have made the area so stink that local people had no choice but to keep their doors shut all the time.

The occurrence is no stranger to the locals as it happens and prompts efforts for a cleanup after every monsoon.

However, the amount of garbage stuck on the beaches this year has exceeded the cleanup ability of public workers and local residents, who are now struggling to find another solution.

“We could just ask and wait for specialized cleanup devices from the higher-level authorities,” said Nguyen Hoai Thanh, chairman of Tinh Ky Commune.

In response to the incident, the People’s Committee of Quang Ngai City has pledged to solve the ocean of trash before the coming Lunar New Year holiday, according to Thanh.
