Vietnam’s Ministry of Health documented an additional 21,744 COVID-19 patients on Monday, alongside 20,172 recoveries and 179 virus-related deaths.

The latest infections, including 53 imported and 21,691 domestic transmissions, were detected in 62 provinces and cities, the ministry said.

Ca Mau registered 5,769 of the newest local cases, consisting of 5,366 found on previous days but added today; Hanoi 2,955; Da Nang 924; Hung Yen Province 675; Hai Phong City 638; Khanh Hoa Province 556; Bac Ninh Province 486; Dak Lak Province 413; Quang Ninh Province 346; Hai Duong Province 262; Thua Thien-Hue Province 262; Vinh Phuc Province 253; Lam Dong Province 220; Quang Nam Province 220; Ho Chi Minh City 204; Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province 188; Phu Tho Province 145; Can Tho City 114; Ha Nam Province 98; Binh Thuan Province 82; and Binh Duong Province 59.

Vietnam had logged 15,643 locally-acquired infections on Sunday.

The country has reported 2,038,959 community transmissions in all its 63 provinces and cities since the fourth virus wave erupted on April 27, 2021. Over 1.74 million of them have recovered from COVID-19.

Ho Chi Minh City leads the tally with 511,461 patients, followed by Binh Duong Province with 291,923, Dong Nai Province with 99,339, Hanoi with 91,384, Tay Ninh Province with 85,732, Ca Mau Province 52,868, Dong Thap Province with 46,588, Can Tho City with 43,801, Long An Province with 41,124, An Giang Province with 35,043, Tien Giang Province with 35,014, Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province with 29,454, Binh Thuan Province with 28,139, and Da Nang with 19,447.

Vietnam confirmed only 1,570 locally-transmitted infections in total in the previous three waves.

The health ministry announced 20,172 recovered patients on Monday, lifting the tally to 1,747,462.

The toll has surged to 35,788 fatalities after the ministry recorded 179 deaths on the same day, including 23 in An Giang Province, 15 in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province, 14 in Hanoi, 11 in Tien Giang Province, 11 in Vinh Long Province, and the remainder in 26 other provinces and cities.  

Vietnam has logged 2,045,290 patients, including 68 imported Omicron infections, since the COVID-19 pandemic first hit the country in early 2020.

The Omicron cases, all quarantined upon arrival in the Southeast Asian country, consist of 30 in Ho Chi Minh City, 27 in Quang Nam Province, three in Da Nang, two in Thanh Hoa Province, two in Khanh Hoa Province, one in Hanoi, one in Hai Duong Province, one in Hai Phong City, and one in Long An Province.

Health workers have administered upwards of 168.9 million vaccine doses, including 897,167 shots on Sunday, since vaccination was rolled out nationwide on March 8, 2021.

More than 78.6 million of the country’s 98 million people have received at least one dose while above 72.4 million have been jabbed twice.

The number of third doses – including additional primary shots for immunocompromised people, boosters, and third jabs of Cuba’s Abdala vaccine has topped 17.9 million.
