Nearly 1.6 metric tons of rotten pigs, believed to be sold for human consumption, were seized by Ho Chi Minh City police on Wednesday.
The seizure was the result of a collaborative effort by the Rach Chiec traffic police team and an animal quarantine station on National Route 1A in Thu Duc City.
Upon inspection, police discovered that a bus driven by Bui Tam Ng., 42, from central Quang Nam Province, had been transporting dozens of bags of rotting pigs and offal.
The bus driver was unable to provide neither quarantine certificates for the pigs nor proof of their origin.
Inspectors quickly issued the administrative punishment against the bus driver for transporting animals without a quarantine certificate and failing to ensure the hygiene requirements for the transportation.
Ng. admitted that he had smuggled the pigs from Quang Ngai Province to Ho Chi Minh City for processing and human consumption, according to preliminary investigation.
He was later asked to destroy the products without reassessment and bear all costs for the destruction.
