A man was arrested by police in Ho Chi Minh City just four hours after he robbed a local gold shop with a hammer on Monday.
Officers under the municipal Department of Public Security confirmed on Monday that they had coordinated with police in Binh Thanh District to apprehend Nguyen Viet Cuong, 23.
At the police station, Cuong claimed he had lost about VND20 million (US$862) in online gambling on Sunday night.
Afraid that his family would find out about the loss, the man planned on robbing a gold shop so that he could pay his debt.

About 11:00 am on Monday, Cuong bought a 30-centimeter-long hammer and scouted the streets in Binh Thanh District on his motorbike.
The man targeted Son Trang gold shop on Xo Viet Nghe Tinh Street in Binh Thanh District when there were no customers there.
Cuong hid the hammer inside his jacket and pretended to browse for jewelry at the shop around noon on Monday.

When the shopkeeper was not paying attention, he smashed the glass of the cabinet with the hammer and took two gold bracelets before fleeing the scene on his motorbike.
Cuong later sold the bracelets at two other gold shops on Nguyen Xi and No Trang Long Streets, also in Binh Thanh District, for a combined VND29.5 million ($1,272).
The man returned home and was arrested at 4:10 pm the same day.
