Three students from Phu Tho Province in northern Vietnam drowned while swimming in a local river on Wednesday afternoon following the deaths of two siblings who drowned in a pond near their house in the Central Highlands province of Dak Nong earlier that same day.
The drowning accident in Phu Tho took place in the Dan River in Vo Mieu Commune, Thanh Son District after lunchtime, according to a local official.
The victims were in sixth-grade and had been swimming with friends.
“Rescuers recovered the bodies of three children,” the official said following the rescue effort.
In May, authorities in Phu Tho Province recorded four tragic drowning cases which killed a total of eight children in Ha Hoa, Cam Khe, and Lam Thao Districts.

On Wednesday morning, nine-year-old Phan Hoang H. and six-year-old Phan Hoang P. drowned while playing in a pond near their house in Dak Sak Commune under Dak Nong’s Dak Mil District.
The brothers, born to a low-income family, were already dead by the time a neighbor discovered their bodies in the pond.
Dak Nong has documented three child drowning cases in the past three months.
