A taxi driver in Hanoi has been fined and has her driver’s license suspended for overcharging a Polish tourist by five times the normal fare for a six-kilometer trip.
Inspectors of the Hanoi Department of Transport on Friday last week levied a fine of VND13.5 million ($580) to Pham Thi Ngoc, a female cabby, for ripping off her foreign guest, Doi Song & Phap Luat (Life & Law) magazine reported on Monday.
Along with the fine, Ngoc had her driver’s license revoked for two months.
On July 1, the municipal Department of Tourism received a report from Apricot Hotel in Hoan Kiem District that one of its guests, Dabrowska Malgorzata, a Pole, had had to pay VND400,000 ($17.1), or five times higher than the normal charge of VND80,000 ($3.4), for a six-kilometer trip from Hoan Kiem Lake to Hai Ba Trung District.
The report, which included the taxicab’s number plate but did not mention the name of the taxi firm, was transferred to the inspectors of the city’s transport department for handling.
After verification, the inspectors issued an administrative violation report to Ngoc and required her to apologize to Malgorzata and return the excess money.
However, as Malgorzata had returned to Poland, a representative of the hotel received the money from Ngoc and will transfer it to the foreign woman later.
