Residents in the northern and central parts of Vietnam are expected to experience a heatwave throughout this week, with temperatures possibly climbing up to 38 degrees Celsius, according to the national weather agency.

Noontime temperatures stayed above 35 degrees Celsius in northern region and several central provinces stretching from Thanh Hoa to Quang Ngai on Sunday.

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said that the scorching weather may persist through Saturday in the north, warning that mercury could reach 38 degrees Celsius.

In the Vietnamese capital city of Hanoi, city dwellers may endure an intense heatwave particularly between Friday and Saturday, during which it could be as hot as around 37 degrees Celsius.

The northern mountainous province of Hoa Binh will possibly experience similar high temperatures especially from Thursday through Friday.

The national weather agency added that the blistering heat in the north could abate starting Sunday.

Meanwhile, the baking heat in the provinces and cities along the central coast  is expected to linger on well into Monday next week.

The hot temperatures, accompanied by low humidity, may pose risks of fires and explosions in residential areas, due to surging demand for power, or result in forest fires.

The central region was warned of more days with high temperatures in July, the weather said, highlighting a possibility of the heatwave returning to the northern region for the rest of the month.
