A number of tourism services, including scuba diving, sea walking, and speedboat tours, on Phu Quoc Island off Kien Giang Province in southern Vietnam have been suspended due to bad weather over the past few days.
Strong winds and big waves have been recorded in the maritime areas near Phu Quoc’s popular islets, namely May Rut Trong, Gam Ghi, and Oc Mong Tay, since Sunday, according to Nguyen Minh Tam, director of Tam Dang Khoa speedboat service company.
The bad weather conditions forced Tam’s company and many similar businesses on Phu Quoc to suspend their operations.
“It is very dangerous to organize speedboat tours in rainy and stormy weather so we decided to cancel all of our tours on Monday and Tuesday,” Tam stated.
All of the money tourists paid for these tours will be refunded, the company director continued.
In favorable weather conditions, Tam’s company services about 500-600 visitors per day, he added.
Nguyen Ha Trieu, a representative from Seaworld Namaste entertainment complex, stated that the venue suspended diving and coral watching services on Monday due to bad weather.
The services will resume when the weather conditions improve, Trieu said.
Due to the effect of a low-pressure area in the East Vietnam Sea, rains and strong thunderstorms were forecast to hit coastal areas from southern Ca Mau to Kien Giang Provinces and in the Gulf of Thailand on Monday and Tuesday, the Kien Giang Department of Tourism quoted the National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting.
Wind speed in these areas is expected to decrease starting Wednesday, the department added.
Bui Quoc Thai, director of the Kien Giang tourism department, requested local businesses to take certain measures to ensure safety for visitors amid the bad weather.
Managers of local beaches were required to deploy additional lifeguards and place warning signs in dangerous areas.
