Two women were killed by a lightning strike as they were traveling to work on a motorbike in Thai Binh Province, northern Vietnam on Thursday, the Vietnam News Agency reported.

Preliminary information showed that the incident took place in Phu Son Commune, Nho Quan District at around 7:30 am on Thursday.

Quach Thi T., 37, and Bui Thi N., 34, who both resided in Thach Binh Commune, were traveling to their workplace by motorcycle along a local street when they were struck by lightning.

Police in Nho Quan District later coordinated with relevant authorities in transporting the deceased back to their families.

A third person who had been riding a different vehicle was also hit by lightning, but was able to regain consciousness and recover after an hour.

It was raining heavily when the lightning strike occurred, according to chairman of Thach Binh People’s Committee Vu Dung.

Both T. and N. worked for a toy company in Nho Quan District, Dung continued, adding that N. had four young children.

The Thach Binh People’s Committee has offered financial support worth VND2 million ($85) to the family of each victim and called on local benefactors to provide further assistance.
