Vietnamese teen boy mistakenly consumes 21 birth control pills at a time

A 15 year-old boy from Hai Duong Province, northern Vietnam, was brought to hospital earlier this week after mistakenly drinking 21 of his mother’s contraceptive pills as he thought they were cough medicine.
A leader of the medical center of Ninh Giang District in Hai Duong said on Friday that N.V.K., 15, was admitted in a normal condition.
His family said that K.’s mother had brought home some pills to treat the boy’s sore throat and coughing, but placed them next to her birth control pills.
Around four hours after the boy had ingested all 21 contraceptive pills, the mother discovered the incident.
The reports did not mention why the boy had swallowed 21 pills at a time.
Doctor Phan Huy Mai of the Ninh Giang medical center said that the drug was flushed out of his stomach.
He was only monitored to look for any signs of poisoning, Mai said.
Mai said it was the first time that the center received a male patient who had accidentally ingested birth control pills, which only have effects on women.
