Google Maps confused users in Ho Chi Minh City on Wednesday by incorrectly labeling a section of Dien Bien Phu Street as Vo Nguyen Giap Street.
The entire Dien Bien Phu Street, a major thoroughfare which stretches from the Ly Thai To roundabout on the border of Districts 3 and 10 to the Saigon Bridge, was incorrectly labeled as Vo Nguyen Giap Street on Wednesday, confusing Google Maps users working off both Android and iOS operating systems.
However, when users pointed to a specific location on the road, the place's address was still displayed with Dien Bien Phu Street.
A representative of Google confirmed the error, adding that Google Maps uses multiple data sources to update information in real time, as well as manual and automatic methods to check precision.
When a situation like this happens, the company tries to resolve it as soon as possible, the representative added.
The street regained its name on the mapping platform on Thursday.
Ten years ago, the administration of Ho Chi Minh City proposed renaming the two-way section of Dien Bien Phu Street between Dinh Tien Hoang Street and the Saigon Bridge as Vo Nguyen Giap Street.
That proposal has yet to be approved.
The city currently has no streets named after legendary General Vo Nguyen Giap, who many experts regarded as one of the greatest military strategists of the 20th century.
