A new species of flowering or tuber plant, named ‘toi da Phong Dien’ in Vietnamese, has been discovered by scientists and forest rangers in the Phong Dien nature reserve in Thua Thien-Hue Province, central Vietnam.

Le Ngoc Tuan, director of the provincial forest protection department, said on Friday that the discovery took place at the end of 2022.

The new plant species is scientifically named Aspidistra phongdiensis, according to Tuan, and was found growing on a waterfall cliff near the Rao Trang River.

Based on the specimen collected from the site, Tuan’s department collaborated with experts from research institutes in Vietnam and around the world to determine this is a new plant species.

It was officially announced as the world’s new plant species at the peer-reviewed scientific journal Phytotaxa on Thursday.

Scientists and forest rangers also lighted on a new species of flowering plant named ‘My nhuy rang cua’ in Vietnamese in the Phong Dien nature reserve in early 2022.
